Creative Industry Tax Relief Statistics Highlight Continued Support for UK Creative Businesses

The UK's creative industries continue to benefit from significant government support, with the latest figures from HMRC showing that businesses claimed £2.45 billion in Creative Industry Tax Reliefs (CITR) during the year ending 31 March 2025.

Creative Industry Tax Reliefs are a valuable collection of Corporation Tax incentives designed to support qualifying companies operating in sectors such as film, television, animation, video games, theatre, orchestras, and museum and gallery exhibitions. Eligible businesses can claim enhanced tax deductions or, in some cases, receive payable tax credits that help improve cash flow and encourage further investment.

Key Creative Industry Tax Relief Statistics for 2024/25

HMRC's latest data highlights the scale of support being accessed across the sector:

  • Film Tax Relief and Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit: 1,145 claims, worth £702 million
  • High-end Television Tax Relief: 830 claims, worth £936 million
  • Animation Tax Relief: 145 claims, worth £38 million
  • Video Games Tax Relief: 1,065 claims, worth £395 million

To qualify, productions must generally pass a recognised cultural test or qualify under an internationally agreed co-production treaty, confirming their status as a British film, programme, animation or video game.

Why These Tax Reliefs Matter

The latest statistics demonstrate the continued importance of tax incentives in supporting growth, innovation and employment within the UK's creative economy. For many businesses, these reliefs represent a significant opportunity to reduce Corporation Tax liabilities and reinvest funds into future projects.

However, the rules surrounding eligibility, qualifying expenditure and claims can be complex. With recent changes introducing the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit regime, businesses should ensure they understand which reliefs apply to their circumstances and how to maximise available support.
